Review

Low decide to enter their second era: one of experimenting with and refining their sound. To do this, they signed to kranky and enlisted Steve Albini to produce a new record. Here, there's a lot of little embellishments. They use strings on multiple tracks, they switch out their usual instruments for things like acoustic guitars and pianos, and they even flirt with almost making a pop song! All the while, they keep to a solid wistful melancholy throughout the whole thing. Their next record with Albini will prove to be better in almost every way, but this record is still a very good one indeed.
